Then I came face to face with the first challenge in trying to create my own version of this dish. Those little bottles of artificial food coloring did not honor my pantry shelves for decades. Well, you probably already know that I try to use the nature of the products produced as much food as possible. I prefer to avoid synthetic chemicals in my kitchen, no matter how safe FD & C dyes summary approved by the FDA are thought to be.
Having read somewhere that there are bakers who use beets to color red velvet cake, I bought some and made my first experience with red velvet Belgian waffles.I cooked and pureed beets before adding the mixture to the waffle batter. I should have done more research first on natural food coloring.
